AeroSep Coalescer, 4″ liquid/gas coalescer cartridge by Exova

Description

The AeroSep Coalescer is the coalescer cartridge in Exova's standard line for separating liquids from air and gas streams. Its graded-pore, resin-bonded glass fiber medium captures oil and water droplets and solids; the droplets coalesce and drain to the bottom of the housing without returning to the outlet stream.

The medium is hydrophobic and oleophobic (grade H): because it does not wet, it drains the coalesced liquid and prevents re-entrainment. It has a fixed pore structure and does not shed fibers into the process, and the extended pleated surface prolongs the element's service life and gives it fast recovery from sudden liquid surges.

It has a 4″ (101.6 mm) diameter, lengths of 10, 20, 30, and 40″, an open end with a 226 O-ring, and a closed end with a removal handle. The end caps are glass-filled nylon, with high mechanical and temperature resistance.

The line is completed by the vessels that house the cartridges: carbon steel or stainless steel pressure vessels designed to ASME Sec. VIII Div. 1, either vertical single-element or horizontal multi-element, and a baffle box that can be installed upstream of the cartridges to separate free liquid and large droplets first.

Hydrophobic and oleophobic medium

Non-wetting glass fiber: drains the coalesced liquid to the bottom of the housing and prevents re-entrainment into the outlet gas.

Fixed pore, non-shedding

Graded-pore, resin-bonded glass fiber: keeps its structure without releasing fibers into the process.

Low pressure drop

Low pressure loss in the saturated state, which reduces the system's energy consumption and operating cost.

Large pleated area

The extended pleated surface prolongs service life and provides fast recovery from sudden liquid surges.

Protects downstream equipment

Retains compressor wear products, lubricating oil, and contaminants, and reduces maintenance costs.

Ø 4″ with 226 O-ring and handle

Lengths from 10 to 40″ and glass-filled nylon end caps with high mechanical and temperature resistance.

Selection data

Vessels to house the cartridges
EquipmentDescriptionTypical application
Vertical single-element housingVertical carbon steel vessel for one cartridge, with a quick-opening or bolted closure, bottom drain boot, and flanged or threaded connectionsLow and medium flow rates
Horizontal multi-element housingHorizontal vessel with several cartridges in parallel and a quick-opening head for change-out; maintains the flow velocity through each elementHigh flow rates
Baffle boxPack of zigzag plates upstream of the cartridges: the gas changes direction, and large droplets impinge, run off, and flow to the drain bootFree liquid, large droplets, and sudden liquid surges (slugs)

The vessels are designed to ASME Sec. VIII Div. 1, in carbon steel or stainless steel. The baffle box is sized for the flow rate and liquid load, and fits both vertical and horizontal housings.

Applications

  • Natural gas and CNG
  • Compressed air and instrument air
  • Petrochemicals, refining, biogas, and process gases
  • Protection of compressors, turbines, membranes, and dryers

Frequently asked questions

How does it separate liquid from gas?

The gas flows through a graded-pore glass fiber medium: oil and water droplets are captured and coalesce, and because the medium is hydrophobic and oleophobic, the liquid drains to the bottom of the housing without returning to the outlet gas.

What are its dimensions and connections?

4″ (101.6 mm) diameter in lengths of 10, 20, 30, and 40″, with a 226 O-ring open end and a closed end with a removal handle.

Which gasket material should be used?

There are six: Buna, Viton, PTFE-coated Viton, EPDM, silicone, and Teflon. The catalog specifies Buna for general service and Viton for hydrocarbons and condensables.

What data is needed to select the model?

Operating flow rate, pressure, and temperature, and gas composition. With that, the model, the number of elements, and the most suitable housing configuration are confirmed.

Is the housing also available?

Yes. The line includes carbon steel or stainless steel pressure vessels designed to ASME Sec. VIII Div. 1, vertical single-element or horizontal multi-element, and a baffle box that can be added upstream of the cartridges.
