AeroSep First Stage, filter separator and dry gas cartridge by Exova

Description

The AeroSep First Stage replaces Jonell TRI-SHiELD™ JFS series cartridges in filter separators and dry gas filters. It is the first stage of the filter separator: it retains solids—sand, iron oxide, and iron sulfide—and pre-coalesces fine droplets so that the second stage of the vessel, the vane pack or the coalescing elements, can separate the liquid.

It reproduces the dimensions and interface of the original cartridge with its own construction: a dual layer of pleated glass microfiber—prefilter and final filter in the same cartridge—on polyester and mesh supports that stiffen the pleat pack and prevent it from collapsing under solids loading. Gas enters through the outer face: the first layer retains the coarse contaminant and the second defines the filtration rating.

It is offered in 3.00, 4.50, and 5.50″ diameters and lengths from 12 to 79″, in ratings of 0.3, 0.5, 1, 5, and 10 µm, with standard, hydrophobic, or oleophobic media, and with or without a core. It operates up to 120 °C (248 °F), and the recommended change-out is at a ΔP of 12 to 15 psid (0.83 to 1.03 bar).

Dual layer in a single element

Pleated glass microfiber prefilter and final filter in the same cartridge: graded filtration without adding a stage to the vessel.

Pre-coalescence

Gathers fine droplets and makes them easier to separate in the second stage of the filter separator.

High retention capacity

The prefilter layer retains the bulk of the contaminant and relieves the final filter, which delays the change-out ΔP.

Support that adds rigidity

Polyester and mesh supports hold the pleat pack and prevent it from collapsing under solids loading.

Up to 120 °C

Maximum operating temperature of 120 °C (248 °F) and recommended change-out between 12 and 15 psid (0.83 to 1.03 bar).

Protects downstream equipment

Shields compressors, meters, and glycol and amine contactors from solids carried by the gas.

Quality and compliance

  • Manufactured in a controlled environment, with a fixed-pore, non-shedding medium
  • Dimensional compatibility with the installed vessel verified before delivery
  • Quality certificate per lot and traceability by lot number

The AeroSep First Stage does not replace the second stage: it complements it. Dirty gas enters the first stage and leaves the second stage clean.

Applications

  • Compressor suction and discharge
  • Gas transmission, gathering, and storage
  • Metering and custody transfer
  • Protection of glycol and amine contactors
  • Pipelines, fuel gas, and molecular sieves
  • Service and instrument air

Frequently asked questions

Is the AeroSep First Stage a coalescer?

No. It is the first stage of the filter separator: it retains solids and gathers fine droplets. The already coalesced liquid is separated by the second stage of the vessel, the vane pack or the coalescing elements.

Why is it pleated if the original is a depth cartridge?

The AeroSep First Stage is equivalent to the JFS in dimensions and interface, with its own construction: a dual layer of pleated glass microfiber.

How do you choose the equivalent of the installed cartridge?

From the JFS code of the installed cartridge: diameter, length, rating, core, gasket, and ends each have their AeroSep equivalent, which also adds the media treatment (standard, hydrophobic, or oleophobic). Send us the code and we will confirm the equivalent.

What temperature can it withstand?

Up to 120 °C (248 °F) operating temperature.

When should it be replaced?

The recommended change-out is at a ΔP of 12 to 15 psid (0.83 to 1.03 bar), measured across the vessel in service.
