PES membrane cartridge for beer and wine
Bioburden reduction and yeast retention in beer, wine, and sparkling wines
Asymmetric PES membrane filter cartridge, 0.45 and 0.65 µm, for reducing bioburden and retaining yeasts before the bottling of beer, wine, and sparkling wines.
The LifePure W Graded is an asymmetric polyethersulfone (PES) membrane filter cartridge with a graded structure, for the food and beverage industry, with a focus on beer, wine, and sparkling wines.
It is offered in two ratings: 0.45 µm, for reducing bioburden and yeasts before bottling, and 0.65 µm, for retaining particles and yeasts. The graded pore distribution increases flow rate and solids retention capacity, and extends the service life of the cartridge. It has 9,000 cm² (0.9 m²) of filtration area per 10″.
The PES membrane has low adsorption of color and aroma compounds, unlike nylon membranes, and is stable across the pH range of 1 to 14. The cartridge is integrity-testable, withstands repeated cycles of steam sterilization and of sanitization with hot water and chemical agents, and can be reused.
0.45 µm to reduce bioburden and yeasts before bottling; 0.65 µm to retain particles and yeasts.
The PES membrane adsorbs little of the color and aroma compounds, unlike nylon membranes.
The graded pore distribution maximizes flow rate and solids retention. 9,000 cm² (0.9 m²) of area per 10″.
Broad chemical resistance of the membrane across the entire pH range of 1 to 14.
Final filter before bottling or prefilter with integrity testing. Withstands steam at 121 °C and can be reused.

| Restriction | Steam and hot water: only for single-open-end cartridges (configurations B, C, D, and E) |
| Rating | Challenge organism | Titer reduction (Tr) | Application |
|---|---|---|---|
| 0.45 µm | Serratia marcescens | > 10⁴–10⁶ | Bioburden and yeast reduction before bottling |
| 0.65 µm | Saccharomyces cerevisiae | > 10⁷ CFU/cm² | Particle and yeast retention |
The 0.45 µm rating reduces bioburden and yeasts before bottling (challenge with Serratia marcescens, Tr > 10⁴–10⁶). The 0.65 µm rating retains particles and yeasts (Saccharomyces cerevisiae, > 10⁷ CFU/cm²).
The PES membrane has low adsorption of color and aroma compounds, unlike nylon membranes.
Yes. The cartridge is integrity-testable and is also used as a testable prefilter. They can also be ordered rinsed with purified water and with integrity tested at the plant.
With steam in-line or in an autoclave at 121 °C and with water at 80 °C, in cycles of 30 to 60 minutes (configurations B to E only), and with peracetic acid or sodium hydroxide up to 1 % (10,000 ppm).
